Social Security Inspector Warns of Disability Scam
Government officials are warning the public about a Disability scam in which callers claim to have information about your Social Security Disability application and offer unsolicited help with your claim.
The Officer of Inspector General (OIG) issued a press release saying the callers appear to be “phishing” or probing for personal information ― such as Social Security numbers or financial information― which could lead to identity theft or government benefits theft.
“You should never provide your Social Security number, bank account numbers or other personal information by telephone or over the Internet unless you are extremely confident of the source to which you are providing the information,” Social Security Inspector General Patrick P. O’Carroll stated in the release.
The OIG received a report from a Maryland resident who recently received several of these calls, even though the resident had not applied for Disability benefits. Another person, who also had not applied for Disability benefits, received three unsolicited calls from someone named “Scott” with a 301 area code.
If you have received suspicious activity or communications concerning Social Security programs, you are encouraged to call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.
